{how to} embrace the fall

I must admit, I’m not the first one to side with fall. I’ll take my summer heat, thank you very much 😉 I’m going to try to give fall a break, though, since it would be difficult to fall (no pun intended) right after the best season ever. I never get sick of the heat or even the humidity, and I can’t get enough of lazy afternoons, cottage weekends, days by the pool + the fresh food and drinks that summer brings. HOWEVER, this year I am going to try to embrace the fall. Yes, I’m going to try. PROJECT EMBRACE FALL – woo woo woo. And I must confess that I’m actually a little excited!

(I want that to be my house)

So.. how does a summer girl lift herself out of denial that the summer is over (though not technically ‘till the 22nd) & actually get excited for what’s to come? Make a list of fun things to look forward to, or, what I like to call my “WANT-TO-DO” LIST! Bring it onnnn.

{fall want-to-do list}

  • visit a farm + go apple picking {done before, but let’s do it again}

  • bake/cook with pumpkin as much as possible (I’m thinking pumpkin muffins, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, etc.) SIDE STORY: I’m secretly obsessed with pumpkins, but really love the idea of them more than in reality. A few years back, I invited my girlfriends over for a pumpkin martini night. The martinis turned out to be a mushy, orangey-brown, hideous mess & everyone was gagging at both the sight and taste of my awful concoction. Oh well, I tried 😉 #FAIL
  • take advantage of the fall flavoured teas at my favourite coffee shops (pumpkin chai lattes, chai tea lattes, etc. I even tried a Starbucks pumpkin spiced latte yesterday!)
  • use the cool weather as an excuse to actually get some cleaning around the house done (my goal: to clean one room/area intensely every week)
  • like the point above, use the cooler weather to spend time relaxing around the house more + to do some serious reading (a book a month)
  • watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s (never seen it. feel like I should.)
  • buckle down + hang our prints to finish up our art wall
  • go on a hike (or two or three) to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage {never gets old}

  • visit my University town
  • go to a haunted house
  • attend some sort of Oktoberfest celebration
  • watch the classic Halloween movies – Double Double Toil & Trouble (MK&A styles) + Hocus Pocus

What about you? What are your favourite fall activities?

In addition to all of the above, I have a few exciting things already planned for the fall, so that helps! What I’m looking forward to over the next couple of months:

  • I’ll be taking a continuing educating course at a local university, which is part of a post-grad certificate program that I’m enrolled in
  • TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) begins this Thursday & Duncan and I are seeing a movie on Friday night .. so excited! I’ll be star gazing 😉
  • birthdays birthdays birthdays – some of my best girlfriends & my Mom are all celebrating their lives this fall!
  • Awestruck Food Truck Festival – um, yes
  • Moving offices at work to a bigger (hopefully better) floor. I really dislike where I’m sitting right now (right by the printer, kitchen + common space) as it’s super distracting, so I’m really looking forward to the change! I also love the feeling of getting a fresh start and being able to re-organize my workspace! (NERDY).
  • Scotiabank Nuit Blanche – Duncan & I have been wanting to do this for years, so we’re actually going to this time around! I plan on wearing really comfortable, cuddly clothes + making a few stops at Starbies to fuel our all nighter on the town!
  • A massage + day for just “ME TIME” 🙂
  • Thanksgiving!
  • Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon – my first half!
  • She’s Connected conference – any other bloggers out there going?! I’m really looking forward to going to my first bloggers networking event, hopefully meeting lots of new people & also learning a ton about this incredible blogging community!
  • Halloween (already got my costume planned ;))
  • A trip to Ottawa to visit some family with my Mama
  • the Metric + STARS concert
  • Duncan’s annual soccer banquet
  • Movember (I don’t know if this is really something I look forward to, but it’s happening. Hahah!)

Holy moly. I didn’t realize how much I really already had planned until I put it down on paper (err, Windows Live Writer). YAY now I’m actually really excited for fall! What do YOU have planned?

Fall is already off with a BANG as I’ve had my first pumpkin spice latte + also went on a bit of a crazy shopping spree this past weekend in Buffalo, NY. To my U.S. friends: you guys have INCREDIBLE sales. Seriously. Can I come live with one of you so that I can shop in the U.S. forever? Basically everything I bought was at least 60% off! It felt sooo amazing to come home with some awesome fall stuff & put it all away in my closet. Not that I enjoy a little retail therapy or anything 😉 Items purchased include: a pair of flats, boots, a dress, two sweaters, pair of jeans, silk blouse + the big one… drumroll.. a really beautiful, classic COACH purse. I may or may not have also ordered another pair of boots when I returned home (67% off was calling my name, baby!). YIKES. Someone stop me before my VISA card explodes.

In other news, I’ve got lots of awesome new recipes + workouts to share with you over the coming days, including a plum protein salad, quinoa bean dip + honey mustard chicken! Be excited 😉

And that’s all from me! I hope your fall is off to a wonderful start!

A xo

  • Do you live somewhere that experiences the fall colour?

  1. You have never seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s??? Whattt? Once I read that portion of your post all other thoughts left my mind. You must see it. I know you are Canadian, but that is an all american movie and simply must be watched by all human beings. Ahmazing! Just seeing the beauty of Audrey Hepburn is worth it. Im jealous of her bone structure and frankly everything about her is flawless to me. Watch it immediately!

    • Hahah well that’s motivation right there 😉 I’ve always wanted to see it, but have never got around to it! I haven’t seen a lot of classic movies, unfortunately! I guess I’ve always just focused on the new releases.

  2. Hi again! Amazing fall list. ‘falling into fall’ is definitely one of my favorite times of year. Pumpkin, crunchy leaves, crisp air, Fall sports, the ‘back to school’ and routine feeling (boo work). You’ve got me intrigued by the She’s Connected conference – I’m definitely going to check it out. Many of your items are on my list too, haha (twinsies). I’m going to jot my mental list down on paper one of these days and hold myself accountable 🙂

    • Yes, definitely check it out and let me know if you get tix! It’s a little pricey, but it should be interesting for sure and good to meet new people 🙂
